How We Select

Private Tutoring
All of our private tutors are highly qualified, experienced tutors. All have, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree in the subject they teach, and many hold or are pursuing advanced degrees or teaching credentials. But beyond the initial requirements of tutoring experience, excellent transcripts, and great references, we look for tutors who are nice people. We believe that personality and relational skills are equally important in making someone a successful tutor. We look for people who are natural, empathic teachers, who know how to look at an academic subject through the eyes of their students and tailor instruction to meet their needs. They vary lessons to keep students interested and excited about learning, and know how to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners. Our tutors are highly organized and incredibly motivating, and they excel at building positive mentor relationships with their students.

Free Tutoring
In our Free Tutoring Program, we select tutors whose qualifications are consistent with state government requirements for SES tutors. Typically, that means tutors have at least 60 college credits, at least one year of work in an educational setting, and demonstrated proficiency in the subject matter and grade level in which they will tutor. Many of our SES tutors go beyond these basic requirements, with advanced degrees or teaching credentials, and many are experienced instructors of students with special learning needs. As in our Private Tutoring program, we look for tutors with caring, engaging personalities and a demonstrated commitment to helping students discover their own potential for academic excellence.
